Natural Products West 2014 (Expo West) aka How to Attract Visitors at a Trade Show

A couple weekends ago was the Natural Products West show in Anaheim, CA. AKA Expo West, this is the biggest North American trade show for the health and wellness segment. It boasted over 2,600 exhibitors and 67,000 visitors. As a trade only show, the only visitors came from within the industry – retailers, distributors, manufacturers etc.. I learned that attracting attention at a trade show is a lot like dating.

Buying Local or Buying from Offshore?

Buying Local or Buying from Offshore?

Is it better to buy domestically or to buy offshore? We live in a globalised world now. It’s incredible. Especially when it comes to information. For the most part, distance is no longer an impediment to transporting information and knowledge. Of course, cultural and political powers have a great influence. While they are factors beyond our control, they must be acknowledged. Similarly, in the transport of physical goods, while globalisation permits access to the far reaches of the world, cultural,…

Improving Shelf Life with Barrier Films 102 – Moisture Barrier (MVTR)

Part 2! Part 1 was all about oxygen barrier, and increasing shelf life by limiting oxygen permeation and reducing the effects of oxidation. Confused? In layman terms, it’s about reducing spoilage. Part 2 talks about controlling another variable: moisture. I think it would be good to dwell on the word spoilage for a minute. Because just about anyone can make rollstock and do some simple printing. Just about anyone can make bags. Unless we…

Improving Shelf Life with Barrier Films 101 – Oxygen Barrier (OTR)

One of the key qualities of packaging is its ability to reduce food spoilage and food waste by letting us keep the packaged food for longer. The shelf life is the amount of time each product will last for before spoiling in sterility or taste. With the modern supply chain in place, it is nearly impossible to get “fresh” food as nearly…

The New Sales Funnel – Is There a Fit?

The New Sales Funnel – Is There a Fit?

A couple weeks ago, when I talked about prospecting, I said that a good prospect has these two criteria, among others: They are interested and open to explore options. They are able to define their requirements. But a great prospect is one that is looking for a solution or set of solutions that fits within your capabilities – in other words, one that has a FIT with your business. There is a MATCH. FIT can be as simple as “He…

Stand Up Pouch – How to pick a Bottom Gusset

Stand Up Pouch – How to pick a Bottom Gusset

Stand Up Pouches are fantastic. I don’t need to go into how convenient they are, but I will say that the convenience factor is attributed to a few key features. These are the tear notch, the closure system and the bottom gusset. There are choices for the closure system – it could be a press-to-close zipper, an Inno-Lok system or even Velcro. Similarly, there are choices for the bottom gusset. As the bottom gusset provides the stability and allows the…
